Jimmie Stagger

Jimmie Stagger’s Slidin’ Blues Guitar Workshop

Slidin’ Blues Guitar Workshop with Jimmie Stagger
Saturday, Sept 19, 2015
4:00-5:00 pm
River Stage

Even if you don’t know the difference between a slide and a pick when it comes to guitar, you’ll learn something interesting about the history and the techniques from this renowned professional musician, and presenter for West Michigan Blues in the Schools program. If interested in the hands-on process, feel free to bring your own guitar!

Jimmie bought his first guitar in 1965, founded the Wealthy Sheiks in 1970, partnered with blues legend Frank Salamone, and later Carl Martin (who led him to playing mandolin, fiddle and bottleneck guitar), before settling on electric guitar and forming the Jimmie Stagger band in 1980. He became known for more than his guitar prowess, with a big, rich voice perfect for compelling storytelling through song. And his Blues Odyssey just kept rolling along. The list of major acts he has played with or opened for includes BB King, Leo Kottke, Buddy Guy, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Huey Lewis & the News, The Kinsey Report, Mighty Joe Young, Larry McCray, Koko Taylor, Bill Kirchen, Bryan Lee, Bucka White, Matt Murphy, Clifton Chenier, Carl Weathersebee, and dozens more! His growing list of accomplishments includes receiving the esteemed “Jammie” award for “The Triumphant Return of Slim Jim” as the best Blues CD from WYCE Radio in 2002. In addition to playing festivals and special events, he is kept busy with community service and charitable activities. Especially close to his heart is working with West Michigan Blues Society’s “Blues in the Schools” program, passing it on to the next generation.
